Why You Should Start Prepping

Why you should start prepping It’s kind of a funny situation when someone first finds out you are a prepper, and they ask why you should start prepping. It’s hard not to just start spouting off the hundreds of reasons a person should be prepared, but to truly answer their question on why you should start prepping, I think we need to first understand what kind of things we should be preparing for. Forcing your mind to start thinking critically is the first step to understanding the minds and actions of preppers. It’s not always about if something could happen, it’s more along the lines of what if it happened? Most preppers don’t live their lives in constant fear of government downfall or nuclear fallout. We simply appreciate the fact that we are prepared for a large variety of potential problems. Some of the more realistic problems a person may eventually deal with are things such as a car breaking down, severe weather conditions, a power outage, or a loss in food supply. These are more like scenarios and exactly why you should start prepping, even if it’s just for small common occurrences. You can also read, How t0 start prepping, if you have decided to get started.

Why You Should Start Prepping

One of the biggest problems we come across in life, is being unprepared. We have seen it through out history, in war, in society. There are so many examples of situations going wrong or getting worse simply because of the lack of preparation. The best thing you can ever do for your family and your self is to start preparing for situations that can happen near you. I would have to say the most common incident you will run across is a vehicle failure. In most cases you would be on the side of the road or in a parking lot while you waited for a tow truck, or changed your own tire. It might be helpful to have a few things for your safety in the car at all times, in case of an incident like this. Keeping something like a reflective vest, a safety triangle, and a few road flairs would make a big difference. Another thing to prepare for the could happen at almost any time is extreme weather conditions. With bad weather, it’s pretty common to have a loss in power for a few hours, but in the case of a really bad storm power could be lost for up to 48 hours. Incidences that have happened in the past have left some residential neighborhoods without power for up to three weeks. Would your or your family be prepared to go without power for 3 weeks? This is why you should start prepping and making plans with your family.

Situations You Should Start Prepping For

It’s it important to know why you should start prepping, as there are so many things to prepare for. It’s hard to think of every possible situation you should prepare for, as many of them are region based. For example, here in Portland Oregon where I live, I don’t see the need to prepare for a tornado. Although there have been tornadoes here in the past, the chances of them occurring are very low. We do however have a place called Umatilla not to far down the road. Which housed hundreds of nuclear warheads during the cold war, and probably still has quiet the stock pile. Because of this my family will have supplies to seal up our house, as well as nuclear grade gas masks. We have countless amounts of industrial facilities too. If attacked these facilities would release toxic chemicals into the oxygen, yet another thing for us to be conscious about. When building a preparation plan for you and your family, try to think of what kind of situations are possible in the region you live in. Do you live in a flood plain? Do you live near industrial buildings? When people ask my why you should start prepping I usually start off by explaining the potential hazards of the region we are in. What are some of the things you will be preparing for based of the region you live in? What do you say when someone asks why you should start prepping? Please leave your comments below!
